OK!  I’m sure I’m not the alone in reading about more than one cannibalistic killer in the world within the past three weeks.  I’m sure I’m not alone in considering this behavior to be bizarre, and even more so that there have been Several cases by Different people in diverse places.  Some readers have stated they believe that the recreational use of Bath Salts may be at fault, but there has been no confirmation of that as the cause.

Other readers have even gone so far as to draw analogies with flesh eating Zombies.  Oh if only that were what this was. If it were  Zombies that were responsible, then we could excuse the behavior as a side effect of a virus, the way that Rabies makes people and animals lose control.

But that Isn’t what is happening here.  These cannibals live in our cities, have no responsible attacking virus, and work among us all as though they were decent human beings!  This madness has even been filmed and sent to the internet as a video by one Canadian man who has since been caught, after an international chase found him in Germany.

Is This a new kind of crime wave? A more gruesome kind of depravity to look forward to in the coming years?  I thought about putting this post in my Political blog, but this isn’t a political problem.  It’s a spiritual one.  These crimes point out a deep divide between what a society Says it believes in, and what it’s actually promoting.  These crimes aren’t just about personal frustration, they are about rage, and hate, and brutality on display for a larger public viewing.

Not unlike the terrorist activity, where people in public places are killed by large explosions; these crimes are meant to be horrific, and to elicit horrified reactions, whether just from the victim, or from a larger public as well.   Even when the perpetrator of the crime is hallucinating, these reactions are still outrageous.  One would Hope that this is not the behavior that was taught as proper by whatever authority raised these persons. This behavior is still way outside what is considered acceptable, so even within a hallucination, it is Still an unacceptable reaction.

How did we get this way?  When did our society become so enamored of  graphic and outrageous behavior that this type of gruesome activity could be considered by any perpetrator?  Did it begin with the talk show circuit?  The public display of unusual and decadent behaviors by one or another of a couple?  Did it enter into the thought cycle with the advent of “Reality” shows, which are set up to be confrontational and to promote irrational behaviors for the ratings that would generate?  Was it because of the attention that international terrorist activity gets, that our usual, run of the mill criminal mind suddenly gets grandiose ideas for attention getting by this means?

Some people would say that these behaviors have always been around, and we are just seeing more of them because we have the internet, but really, these types of behaviors have made the news in other times, and have been talked about world wide as well, the way that Jack the Ripper was, or that the Boston Strangler was, or the Lindberg Kidnapping.  They made the news internationally too, and they didn’t have the internet then.  So I don’t think this behavior is always out there.  It seems to be a periodic type of behavior. The last time there was a world wide tracking of it was prior to World War I.  I hope that an increase in cannibalism is not an indicator of another world wide event of that nature.

How do we turn this around?  How do we make it once again, an unacceptable, never to be thought of, let alone carried out,  crime.  What do we do as a society to get back to a stronger moral footing?  Is there something we can choose as a People, that would discourage this behavior once again?

Do we choose Not to publish this type of behavior?  How about not publishing the neighbors dirty laundry?  Maybe we should go back to rolling up the sidewalks on Sundays; no businesses open, and encourage more people to attend some kind of church service, to be reminded that there will be an accounting for our choices.  What will it take for people to Not want to consider eating each other as a form of punishment/criminal attention getting?  How has this modern society fallen so far?!
